Main Loft

  • Open loft void above bedrooms
  • No fire separation currently
  • Sound travels between rooms via loft (over block walls)
  • Block walls between bedrooms are great for sound
  • BUT: open loft void above allows sound to travel over walls
  • Plasterboard ceilings flex and transmit vibration
  • Joist voids (if running over walls) act as sound bridges
  • Extend block wall height using PIR in loft
  • Blocks air path (main sound transfer route)
  • Even 1 foot of PIR above wall line helps significantly
  • Not soundproofing per se, but air barrier does most of work
  • Rockwool or similar over ceiling joists
  • Additional mass reduces sound transfer
  • PIR wall extensions above bedroom walls
  • Fire separation (consider as part of garage conversion regs)
  • Ventilation (ensure not blocked by insulation)
  • 22mm cold water main loops up here and back down (legacy tank system)
  • Rafters sit over wall, accessible from outside
  • Roof valley area - wrap in PIR (25mm on hand)
